Sustainability of Plant-Based Meat Fact Sheet
The Good Food Institute has released a fact sheet on the sustainability of plant-based meat. This fact sheet, Plant-Based Meat for a Growing World, shares recent life-cycle assessments (LCAs) of plant-based meat products, as compared to conventional meat. Metrics include:
- greenhouse gas emissions
- land use
- water use
- aquatic nutrient pollution, and
- antibiotic use.
The authors conclude that plant-based meats offer consumers the taste of conventional meat at a fraction of the environmental cost of animal meat. The plant-based meat industry still represents less than 1 percent of the retail meat market. However, animal agriculture faces declining returns whereas plant-based meat continues to improve.
