Evidence suggests that foods can help conquer moodiness and more serious mood problems such as anxiety and depression. Studies show a dramatic improvement in depression and hostility scores, along with physical benefits, with a plant-based diet. Another potential mechanism is the high-fiber content of a plant-based diet. Fiber fosters healthy gut bacteria, which release short-chain fatty acids that appear to have favorable effects in the brain. In addition to eating a plant-based diet, it is helpful to exercise regularly and get plenty of sleep. Class format: Welcome & overview, video lesson, class discussion, cooking demonstration, and Q&A. The Food for Life program is a collaborative effort of physicians, researchers, and nutritionists who have joined together to educate the public about the benefits of a healthful diet for improved health and disease prevention. Based in Washington, D.C., Food for Life is a program of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. This virtual class is for ages 18+. Register here: https://form.jotform.com/211216047293045
